CASA CAVAZZINI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art

A new way of experiencing art

Modern and functional, designed in the renovation project by architect Gae Aulenti, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art "Casa Cavazzini" is intended to be a hub of contemporary art in Udine.
Located in the heart of the historic center and housed in the sixteenth century building donated to the city by the merchant Dante Cavazzini, the museum spreads over three levels, for a total of 3,500 square meters.

It occupies the first and second floor and offers a completely renewed exhibition of the collections from the previous museum (the Gallery of Modern Art, now closed, which was housed in the complex Palamostre).

The museum makes it visible again to the public the most prestigious collections of its assets:

  •  Astaldi Collection (donated to the Civic Museums of Udine in 1982 by Maria Luisa and Sante Astaldi): it contains works by internationally known italian artists such as De Chirico, Savinio, De Pisis, Carrà  and Santomaso
  •  Collection FRIAM: 113 works by famous and influential names in the history of contemporary American art, such as Willem de Kooning, Frank Stella, Sol LeWitt  and Carl Andre; these works were donated by the artists after the earthquake that struck Friuli in 1976 in order to contribute to the reconstruction.
  • the works of the brothers Dino, Mirko and Afro Basaldella.

The section dedicated to Basaldella is located next to the apartment rooms, now part of the exhibition, where Dante Cavazzini, in 1938, commissioned the young Afro and Mirko Basaldella and Corrado Cagli an important cycle of wall paints, recently restored.

Another section of the route is dedicated to the remaining works of the rich heritage of the museum; due to the high number of works, some pieces are exhibited in rotation.

The restoration of Casa Cavazzini brought to light spectacular frescoes, previously unknown and dated to the second half of the fourteenth century, that now constitute a museum within the museum.
The restructuring has also discovered two amazing archaeological areas: the beautiful "Venetian" tank of the sixteenth century and a considerable deposit of protohistoric pottery, dating from the first Iron Age (second half of the eighth century BC), the oldest documented discovery at the site; special windows enable the visitor to ejoy the archaeological areas.
